Days after the election results came in, and in recent days after the election results certification, certain prophets have come out publicly to give what I will describe as “excuses” for why they were wrong. Others simply said that the second term for Donald Trump was predicated on the saints praying and supporting the president and because that did not happen, Trump has lost his second Term. Another said the second term was conditional on Trump fulfilling certain things, and in the absence of that, there would be no second term. One high-profile Prophet that I did not know of…

NIGERIA’S UNFORTUNATE EXAMPLE

Nigeria has introduced two bills to criminalize social media content. The bills claim to target hate speech and inappropriate social media content. Amnesty has stated that “Nigeria: Bills on hate speech and social media are dangerous attacks on freedom of expression.” Seun Bakare, Programmes Manager Amnesty International Nigeria explained that “Social media is one of the last remaining places where Nigerians can express their opinions freely. …

LAW STUDENTS DEMONSTRATING SEEKING REFORM OF LEGAL EDUCATION

On 7th October 2019, law students from the different law schools in Ghana staged a demonstration against alleged injustice with regard to legal education. Their displeasure was directed toward the General Legal Council (GLC) and its chair, Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Abena Boafoa Akuffo the Chief Justice of Ghana. The demonstration was met with brute force by the Ghana Police Service. Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Frederick Adu Anim and his officers arrived in full riot gear and without provocation “fired rubber bullets at the students, sprayed the students with water from their water cannons and fired tear…

Yesterday (September 30, 2019), there was public outrage at portions of a document purported to be the manual to be used for the controversial Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) curriculum in Ghanaian schools. The document titled ‘KnowitOwnitLiveit: Comprehensive Sexuality Education Manual’ showed content the Ghanaian public deemed inappropriate for training children.

A consultant to the CSE program took to the airwaves and denied knowledge of this ‘KnowitOwnitLiveit: Comprehensive Sexuality Education Manual’ developed by and for the ECOWAS CEDERD region. …

Reports on Comprehensive Sexuality Education

For some days now, family campaigners, religious groups and ordinary Ghanaians have raised an outcry in the media about the Government of Ghana’s Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) policy document. One news outlet ran the story ‘Comprehensive Sexuality Education: Education Minister lied to us — Catholic Bishops cry out’. There are others like that. Much of the discourse contains misinformation that this post will seek to address such as: What is CSE? What does it entail? Has it been implemented elsewhere? Where does it come from? …

The international system is filled with two major groupings of nations — those who produce raw materials without adding value to them and those who add value to those raw materials. Many of Africa’s nations belong to the former. This is challenging considering that the UN estimates Africa’s current population to double in a mere thirty six years. If African nations today are struggling with the provision of basic necessities such as food, shelter and security for its people, how much more when this population doubles ceteris paribus in less than one generation? …

Ed Sheeran — Bibia Be Ye Ye

The artistic sub-cultures or communities in any society can be used to test the pulse of the country. Art is simply a visual expression of facts, thoughts, and ideas in the form of a painting, sculpture or a music video. Today, I would like to discuss the lamentation and rants of a segment of the youth expressed through two music videos. Ghana’s current political regime is a paternalistic winner-takes-all strain of democracy, although internationally, it purports to practice a multiparty republican strain of democracy awash with free speech and citizen participation. The former is not big on free speech especially…

A two yearlong undercover investigation by Tiger Eye PI led by Ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has resulted in a documentary titled Number 12. The film has brought out some earthquake revelations about the Ghanaian elite and the political system.

In today’s world, the perception of corruption is just as bad as corruption. That is why you have corruption perception indexes. Number 12 does not only bring up the perception of corruption amongst the current government administration in Ghana but the video actually shows instances of corruption “by way of match fixers, bribe takers, integrity fakers. From referees to…

INTRODUCTION

A U.S. Army War College study titled, “The Impact of Missile Threats on the Reliability of US Overseas Bases” bluntly declares that, “U.S. national security strategy requires access to overseas military bases” (Wuthnow, 2005). To this end, the U.S. has been working overtime to establish bases all over the world.

Captain Jeffrey J. Draeger of the U.S Navy penned the paper, “Overseas Military Bases: Understanding Host Nation Support” in which he explains that the reason for establishing bases is about “exerting strategic influence, enable global access and project power when necessary” (Draeger, 2012). This is why the U.S. wants a…
